2027 Health Sciences Sustainability Film Festival – FF2027
Every year, the Health Sciences Sustainability Film Festival brings Pitt’s health sciences community together for a time of storytelling that matters. Short films by faculty, staff, and students sit alongside a curated program of films — all exploring what sustainability really means for the future of health and health care. Hosted by the Office of Sustainability in the Health Sciences (OSHS) at the University of Pittsburgh, the film festival is part celebration, part call to action.
The festival unfolds in two parts: The first part is a curated selection of short films chosen to inspire, alert, celebrate, or engage. The second one is open call for original entries from across the Pitt community — because some of the best ideas about a sustainable future for health care are already here, waiting to be told on screen.

This Year’s Theme
In a hospital, “Code Blue” means one thing: a life is in the balance and every second counts. It’s the signal that sends a response team running towards a crisis.
This year’s theme asks a pointed question: What if we treated the climate crisis with that same urgency? Heat waves are already driving heatstroke epidemics. Warming temperatures are expanding the reach of vector-borne disease. Declining air quality is contributing to respiratory failure. These are no longer distant or abstract threats. They are medical emergencies unfolding in real time, for our patients and our planet.
FF2027 invites (wannabe) filmmakers across the Pitt community to explore Code Blue: Climate, Health, and Emergency — and to imagine what it looks like to respond with the urgency this moment deserves.
See the Emergency for Yourself
2026 has offered no shortage of real-world examples of climate impacts turning into health emergencies, including right here in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Here are a few starting points for filmmakers looking for inspiration or grounding:
Extreme Weather in 2026
- The 2026 Southwest U.S. heat wave was one of the six most astonishing weather events of the century — Yale Climate Connections
- Extreme heat, cold, precipitation and fires mark the start of 2026 — World Meteorological Organization
Locally: Southwestern Pennsylvania
- Extreme heat warning in effect for most of Pittsburgh area through Friday — CBS Pittsburgh (KDKA)
- Allegheny County issues Code Red heat advisory due to heat wave — CBS Pittsburgh (KDKA)
Medical Issues & Emergencies Linked to Extreme Weather
- CDC Heat & Health Tracker — national data on heat-related ER visits, hospitalizations, and deaths — CDC
- Heat Is the Deadly Weather Event Nobody Stops For — Healthcare Ready
- America’s Deadliest Season Arrives Early: Phoenix, Houston, and Chicago Face a Dangerous Summer as Heat-Related ER Visits Surge — Medical Daily
- Mosquito-Borne Disease Control Program — 2026 West Nile Virus surveillance in Pennsylvania — PA Dept. of Environmental Protection
Partnership with the Eco Artisans Exhibit
This year FF2027 is shared with the Eco Artisans Exhibit, an annual sustainable art showcase hosted by the Student Office of Sustainability. Held each year during Earth Month, Eco Artisans brings together visual, audio, and video art made from reused or sustainably sourced materials — a natural companion to a festival built around sustainability storytelling. Together, the two events turn one week into a campus-wide event of environmental awareness, justice, and creative action.
